Where there's a will, there's a way ... I guess. The European Transport Safety Council has announced, via a congratulation message, that 8 European countries have cut their road deaths by 50% since 2001. The countries are Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Spain, Luxembourg, Sweden, France and Slovenia. The three Baltic countries lead the pack in reducing deaths since 2001: Latvia and Estonia have achieved 61% reductions, while Lithuania achieved 58%. They are followed by Spain (55%), Luxembourg (54%), France (51%), Sweden (50%) and Slovenia (50%). Portugal, Ireland, Germany, the UK, Italy, Slovakia and Belgium have all achieved reduction figures better than the 43% EU average. The overall reduction in deaths is over 100,000 deaths since 2001 and the benefits to society are estimated at 176 billion euro. From the chart, you can see that Romania is by far the worst European country in terms of doing something about road safety. But for many countries, France included, the governments can save a lot of motorcycle lives if they would finally do something about the crash barriers. There are still so many out there that will decapitate you if you fall off your motorcycle. But that costs money, it doesn't bring in money, so it's a low priority.
