Europe: 21-27 Apr 2008: 100,000 Speeding Tickets/Day

During the period 21 to 27 of April 2008, the joint traffic Police forces in the European union made a concerted clampdown on speeding. Using fixed and mobile radars, the local Police forces ticketed an average of 100,000 speeding cars and motorcycles PER DAY!

Below is the table of countries involved in the operation:

Not surprisingly, France still has the highest number of speeding offenders. But when you start looking at the numbers more closely, you'll notice that it's not the worst. Let's add the number of inhabitants per country (finding the number of licensed drivers is next to impossible), and take the speeding tickets as a percentage of the inhabitants.

Now, France is percentage-wise "only" in the 3rd worst spot, while The Netherlands is by far the worst, followed by Cyprus.

Still, the numbers are very high. I wonder what would happen to the statistics if I stopped riding my motorcycle....Hide Smiley
