It looks like the European Commission , you know that bunch of politicians in Brussels that are actively looking at imposing as many laws as they can in order to keep their well paid jobs, are looking at further striking at the motorcycle industry. Already they are imposing ABS on all motorcycles over 125cc, but now they want to go further according to Dutch site NieuwsMotor . According to the well informed site, the Commission wants make a "Onboard Diagnostic System" (OBD) mandatory on all motorcycles starting in 2017. This OBD will register when you replace a part on the motorcycle, and when that happens, it will refuse to start. Only official dealers will be able to access the OBD. This means that self-maintenance is a thing of the past, or at least, changing "hardware" for after-market ones. They also want to seal the ECU, and only allow dealers with special tools to access the unit. According to the site, the EC do not want bikers to change the technical specifications of the motorcycle. Obviously changing items like mirrors, saddles, windscreens, etc should be OK for now, but changing an exhaust, shock breakers, etc will not be. The European Federation of Motorcycle Manufacturers (FEMA ) are deadset against this. But then, which politician ever listens to the people? If the EC truly want to impose this kind of legislation, they are going to have a bloody fight on their hands. I can not imagine that bikers in Europe are going to take this lying down.
