You can see more and more that electric motorcycles have arrived and are here to stay. The latest sign, and it's quite a big one, is when one of world's biggest motorcycle tour operators, the Austrian Edelweiss Open Edelweiss in a new window, has put in their 2014 tour catalog a tour of the Alps on electric motorcycles!!

Called the Zero Emission Alpine Backroads Open Edelweissbike link in a new window, Edelweiss offer the 7 day (5 of which are actually riding days) holiday on Zero Open link in a new window SEicma 2011 Electric Zero or DSZero DS Electric Motorcycle 2013 electric motorcycles.

Edelweiss Electric Motorcycle Tour

Despite being sceptic initially about the use of electric motorcycles for tours (which are usually way beyond the range of electric bikes), after experimenting last year in the Alps region, they decided unanimously to do it. Everyone was very happy with the behavior and feeling the electric motorcycles brought to the table and the grin on the faces of their tour guides said it all.

Edelweiss Electric Motorcycle Tour

Riding mountains is not like riding long distance on normal roads, but requires continuous throwing your bike into the curves, braking and descending the high mountain passes. All this obviously regenerates electricity charging your battery while you are riding (the Zero motorcycles recharge when braking, even engine braking). Also, 150 kilometers in the mountains is like doing 500 km on open roads, so tiring. The tour is graded as "Tough", so expect many (between 7 and 9) hours of twisting roads.

The tour takes you through some of the most incredible mountain passes this world has to offer; Silvretta High Alpine Road, the Stelvio, the Gavia pass, the Mendel Pass, the passes of the Sella Ronda and the Timmelsjoch.

It's a match made in heaven, touring the Alps on an electric motorcycle. The Alps are seen as very ecological, and the fact that you ride there with no emissions and almost no noise will make this a popular tour with the locals.

The cost for the 7 day tour lies between €2,390 and €2,700 depending on sharing, duo, etc.

If you do not know who Edelweiss is, have a look at their promotional video below (not about the electric tours, just a general one).
