As I have said before, Europe is anything but unified. Rules differ a lot between countries, and when travelling to another European country, you can get fined because you did not have the proper equipment. And to make matters worse, the laws applied to car drivers do not always apply to motorcycle riders.

Chicken HiViz Vest

The hi-vis vests is one of those laws. Many countries make it mandatory for all car drivers to have at least one set inside the car within easy reach. When, or if, you exit your car because of breakdown or accident, you must put on the vest. Some countries even demand that every occupant of the car has a vest. But few, thankfully, have these kind of demands on bikers. Here are the European countries that make it mandatory to have high visibility vests for motorcycle riders..

Belgium flag

You need to have at least one vest with you, but only need to put it on in case of a problem.

Now, did I miss any? Remember, these rules change faster than you change underwear. Before heading out, check with the local tourist office.
