 Like last year, Dutch GPS manufacturer TomTom , have used their traffic planning & reporting system to map out where traffic jams are. It's one of the nice things of a modern-day GPS, the fact that when riding your motorcycle, you know that there's a traffic jam ahead of you. If you're stuck in the traffic jam, the TomTom records this. Once you've connected your GPS to the internet, that data is sent to the central server. This way, TomTom can see where and when there are traffic jams, and accordingly, it can determine which cities are most restricted. Last year, they released the list of the top 60 European cities that were congested. The 2011 edition has arrived, and Brussels, Belgium still tops the list. The UK has gotten worse, as a country they sit at the top of the country list. London, despite a decrease of 0.2% in traffic, went up the list from 4th to 3rd place. 3 cities in the UK, and 4 cities in France are in the top 10! The best big city is Germany's Cologne, the last in the Top 50. As countries go, Spain, Switzerland, Norway, Hungary, Ireland and the Czech Republic are the countries to ride your motorcycle, each with only one city in the top 50 list. Here's the Top 50 list: | | | | 2011 | | 2010 | | | | Europe | | City | % congested | network length researched (in km) | % congested | network length researched (in km) | difference in % congested 2011-2010 | | 1 | BE | Brussels | 38,9 | 407 | 37,7 | 395 | 1,2 | | 2 | PL | Warsaw | 38,1 | 498 | 37,5 | 481 | 0,5 | | 3 | UK | London | 34,5 | 1 990 | 34,7 | 1 909 | -0,2 | | 4 | PL | Wroclaw | 33,1 | 249 | 35,7 | 213 | -2,6 | | 5 | FR | Toulouse | 33,0 | 347 | 34,8 | 347 | -1,9 | | 6 | FR | Lyon | 32,6 | 219 | 32,3 | 219 | 0,2 | | 7 | UK | Edinburgh | 31,7 | 252 | 34,5 | 246 | -2,8 | | 8 | FR | Marseille | 30,4 | 389 | 31,2 | 387 | -0,8 | | 9 | FR | Paris | 29,9 | 725 | 30,4 | 711 | -0,5 | | 10 | UK | Manchester | 29,5 | 855 | 29,4 | 854 | 0,1 | | 11 | UK | Bradford | 29,4 | 216 | 29,4 | 220 | 0,0 | | 12 | UK | Belfast | 29,0 | 299 | 31,8 | 294 | -2,8 | | 13 | UK | Oxford | 29,0 | 208 | 28,7 | 208 | 0,3 | | 14 | IT | Milan | 28,2 | 431 | 29,4 | 418 | -1,2 | | 15 | UK | Birmingham | 27,5 | 949 | 28,5 | 921 | -1,0 | | 16 | CH | Zurich | 27,4 | 229 | 27,0 | 225 | 0,4 | | 17 | NO | Oslo | 26,9 | 274 | 26,4 | 269 | 0,5 | | 18 | IT | Rome | 26,8 | 995 | 28,0 | 998 | -1,2 | | 19 | UK | Aberdeen | 26,3 | 228 | 26,7 | 228 | -0,4 | | 20 | IT | Naples | 26,2 | 265 | 26,1 | 259 | 0,1 | | 21 | NL | Amsterdam | 26,0 | 376 | 27,7 | 362 | -1,7 | | 22 | NL | Rotterdam | 25,3 | 445 | 28,8 | 434 | -3,5 | | 23 | ES | Barcelona | 25,0 | 213 | 26,3 | 211 | -1,3 | | 24 | IE | Dublin | 24,2 | 578 | 33,9 | 583 | -9,7 | | 25 | DE | Munich | 24,0 | 653 | 22,4 | 655 | 1,6 | | 26 | HU | Budapest | 23,7 | 763 | 26,2 | 742 | -2,5 | | 27 | AT | Graz | 23,7 | 209 | 22,3 | 209 | 1,4 | | 28 | IT | Genoa | 23,5 | 310 | 22,7 | 311 | 0,8 | | 29 | UK | Nottingham | 23,1 | 645 | 23,7 | 645 | -0,6 | | 30 | FR | Montpellier | 22,9 | 213 | 21,7 | 213 | 1,2 | | 31 | AT | Vienna | 22,9 | 750 | 22,4 | 748 | 0,5 | | 32 | DE | Hamburg | 22,8 | 970 | 20,6 | 970 | 2,2 | | 33 | UK | Southampton | 22,8 | 391 | 22,7 | 391 | 0,1 | | 34 | IT | Turin | 22,6 | 326 | 24,2 | 326 | -1,6 | | 35 | NL | Utrecht | 21,8 | 318 | 26,2 | 318 | -4,4 | | 36 | CZ | Prague | 21,6 | 683 | 23,6 | 632 | -2,0 | | 37 | DE | Bonn | 21,5 | 258 | 20,3 | 257 | 1,2 | | 38 | DE | Stuttgart | 21,3 | 416 | 19,1 | 416 | 2,2 | | 39 | PL | Kraków | 21,2 | 233 | 21,2 | 224 | 0,0 | | 40 | NL | Haarlemmermeer | 20,9 | 250 | 22,1 | 249 | -1,2 | | 41 | UK | Bolton | 20,1 | 275 | 19,8 | 275 | 0,3 | | 42 | UK | Guildford | 20,1 | 205 | 20,5 | 205 | -0,4 | | 43 | UK | Wakefield | 19,6 | 254 | 20,1 | 254 | -0,5 | | 44 | FR | Nice | 19,6 | 226 | 19,3 | 226 | 0,3 | | 45 | UK | Leicester | 19,5 | 451 | 19,6 | 451 | -0,1 | | 46 | BE | Antwerp | 19,4 | 465 | 19,4 | 465 | 0,0 | | 47 | UK | Liverpool | 19,4 | 483 | 20,3 | 485 | -0,9 | | 48 | UK | Cambridge | 19,3 | 428 | 18,0 | 428 | 1,3 | | 49 | DE | Essen | 19,0 | 284 | 21,1 | 276 | -2,1 | | 50 | DE | Cologne | 18,9 | 865 | 18,1 | 862 | 0,8 |
