FEMA announced yesterday that after a 20 year long political fight, the CEN (Central European Committee for Standardization)members in Europe have adopted resolution 319, aimed at developing a European Standard for safety barriers. These motorway guardrails will now be designed to be safer for motorcycles and their riders. There have been several reports of motorcycle riders crashing on the road, and then sliding towards a safety barrier. Most of them are raised, so the rider slides under them, and in the process decapitates him/herself. Now that this resolution is going to be in effect, it will mean that all European Community countries will need to place barriers complying with this new standard, making the roads a little safer for us motorcycle riders. So far, Spain and Portugal have on their own been placing motorcycle safe barriers, while other countries have done similar, but never at a national level. Now, the question is how long will it be for us to see these changes? My bet would be in many years from now....
