Some countries in Europe are imposing a technical inspection on older motorcycles (usually 5 years or older), and now the European Commission wants to impose a biannual inspection to all European Union member countries. A petition has been circulating in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Ireland, Norway and Denmark by FEMA , and have received some 110,000 signatures.
FEMA president Gerard Livett Petition Handover to Siim Kallas | The technical inspection must be paid for by the motorcycle owner, and according to the statistics, will not improve safety, since only 0.3% of all accidents are caused due to technical failure. In France, the FFMC (Association of Angry Bikers) has been fighting the inspection for the same reasons. FEMA General Secretary Aline Delhaye says, "The Commission is barking at the wrong tree: there is no need for harmonization of inspections for motorcycles. It looks like a good idea but it's not, it only means more expenses for users, for no safety benefit. The European Union should instead focus on the real issues if it wants to improve safety: training, driver behavior and infrastructure; as proposed by the European Parliament last week." FEMA handed over the petition to the European Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas. God knows what they'll do with it...
