I thought I knew most of the big motorcycle manufacturers out there, but I was wrong (as usual). When you have a manufacturer who makes some 200,000 motorcycles and scooters per year, you'd expect to know them, right? I mean, Ducati is world famous, but only produces some 50,000 units per year, so 4 times that should be even more know....

The company is called Italika Open Italika in a new window, and they are Mexico's big motorcycle manufacturer. They started using the Korean Hyosung motorcycle as their basis, assembling them in Mexico, but now they're on their own. They design and make several models and sell them not only in Mexico but Guatemala, Brazil, Honduras, Peru, Panama, El Salvador and Argentina.

As far as market share goes, Atalika "own" the Mexican market with some 63% market share in 2011; impressive for a company created in 2005. 1,000,000 motorcycles were made and sold since their creation. Here's what a few of their bikes look like.

Their, what would appear to be their top-of-the-line, biggest displacement motorcycle is the RT200.

The RT200 is a 4 stroke 200cc engine capable of bringing this "race" motorcycle to speeds up to 110 kph (68 mph).

The torque is 14 Nm at 6000 rpm, and it delivers 14.95 Horsepower at 7500 rpm.

The bike can run efficiently, 27 kilometers per liter (63 mpg) used. It has both electric and manual kickstarter. The whole bike weighs 150 kgs.

I tried looking for prices, but could only find secondhand ones. However, how much would a supersport motorcycle capable of running 110 kph cost? The Italika range of motorcycle come only in red & black color schemes (source Open source link in a new window).

They also have a dual-purpose motorcycle, called the DM150. The Atalika DM150 is a 150cc engine delivering 13.3 HP at 7500 rpm and a torque of 13.63 Nm at 5500 rpm.

That four stroke engine will send you along your way at a top speed of 88 kph (54 mph)....Fuel efficiency is 34 kilometers per liter (80 mpg) for a weight of 150 kilos.

Atalika have many different models, ranging from 110 cc scooters to 200 cc motorcycles, and even a 150 cc ATV. Not exactly groundbreaking motorcycles, nor high performance, but low cost and easy to maintain bikes needed in areas where the roads may be bad or non-existent, and the local dealers to far away, so you need to repair the bike yourself with a minimum of tools.
