Most of us ride around on our motorcycle with a helmet. It's safer, and it provides a lot of protection, not only when you hit the road in case of an accident, but also from noise, bugs, rain, etc. But once you arrive at your destination, what are you going to do with the helmet? In some countries you can leave your helmet on your motorcycle. No one will take it away. But in many countries, it's either an invitation to steal, or for some prankster to mess with your helmet. So you end up bringing the helmet with you. But helmets are bulky, so a pain-in-the-ass. 25 year old Australian Jessica Dunn thought so too. She spent five months in Indonesia riding around on a motorcycle, and hauling the helmet when she was not riding. Fed up, she designed the Proteus folding helmet (after all, she's an industrial designer).. The Proteus helmet is made out of an outer layer of polycarbonate resin and a polystyrene foam inner shell, while the very inside uses a material that is pliable normally, but becomes hard when impacted. The sides of the helmet fold into the inside, reducing the helmet bulk by 20%, enough to put in your backpack. The helmet meets Australia's safety standards. Currently the Proteus folding motorcycle helmet is short-listed for the James Dyson award . I hope she wins, since it's time for a good folding helmet that we can carry around.
