Last year we saw the 100 years of motorcycle exhibition/celebration close to where I live in the town of Cany-Barville Click for map (link Open link in a new window). In the communal hall of the town many classic and vintage motorcycles were exhibited, and the number of spectators was pretty impressive for such a small town. This is 'shit-kicker' country, so it's even more impressive since the infrastructures are not the same as in Paris.

This year, same town, same theme. But this year, I was quite disappointed in the quality of motorcycle exhibited. Last year we saw many vintage motorcycle (see the link above), while this year the bikes were classic motorcycles, but more from the 70's, 89's and even 90's - more secondhand motorcycles than vintage. Nevertheless there were some beauties on display.

And as usual with these kind of events, a lot of the actions was outside, where you could see wall-to-wall motorcycles. Most bikers when the arrived walked through the motorcycle parking before going to the exhibit.

The hall was pretty full with many motorcycles and very few (luckily) professional stands.

Let's look first at the most impressive (IMHO) motorcycle on the expo grounds: a 6 (yes, SIX) cylinder Honda motorcycle:

Just look at the width of those 6 cylinders in-line, not even in V form. A wall of cylinders.

It's a Honda CBX 6 Cylinder from 1980. The bike still runs in races today by its owner. The bike has been customized a bit.

I'm just think of getting the timings and valves right on this monster. And how much does it consume?

Does anyone know what the round metal ring behind the tires are for? Iy's not to prevent it from wheeling over since it's way too high.

A very standard, and very popular Suzuki GT 125L from 1974, a 2 stroke engine developing 15 hp.

This is a Honda 50 Dream, a 50 cc 4-stroke from 1997.

Suzuki was well represented, followed by Honda, then Yamaha. A lonely Kawasaki and a few Moto Guzzi made up the rest.

Here is a spotless Suzuki RG500 from 1986. 96 hp for 154 kg (dry) giving a max speed of 230 kph.

It's a 2-stroke 4 cylinder in block form engine.

One of the few Yamahas there, a FZR750R from 1990.

4 cylinders providing 102 horses at 12000 rpm.

The whole thing weighs 187 kilos.

My favorites, the Velo Solex, a small 2 stroke engine that sits on top of the front wheel. Turning it on involved you pedalling and then pushing the engine onto the wheel.

You could go really fast with it provided you a) pedalled really hard or b) put alcohol or nitro-methanol in the tank (which I can attest to first hand).

So that concludes a quick visit to the Cany-Barville 100 Years of Motorcycles exhibition, the 2014 edition. Please don't forget to tip your guide when leaving the building.
