So far, the French government has been blind to the motorcycle cause. Despite massive motorcycle protest rides, instead of accepting a few of our issues, they have gone the other way; more speed radars, technical inspections and most importantly, they want the cops to target motorcycles.

One of the main issues the French bikers have is the legality of lane splitting. Lane splitting (or filtering as it is known in some countries) has always been accepted, but not legal in France. In other words, over the years, we've been doing it, and you never got ticketed for it. But recently that has changed. Now, if you get caught splitting, you can get up to 3 tickets (one for passing a car on the right, one for not respecting the distance between vehicles and one for changing lanes without a need to change direction... an obscure law).

In a country where cars respect motorcycles, and understand the need for lane splitting, where cars go out of the way to let you through, it's unbelievable that it's not allowed. I can understand that if cars don't play the game, it can become dangerous, but here in France, the cars WANT you to split lanes, since it means less vehicles on the road, and therefore less traffic!

Protest ride

The French Federation of Angry Bikers (FFMC Open link in a new window) is organizing a massive protest on Friday 18 June and in some areas on Saturday 19th. On that date, they want all bikers to go to the provincial authorities (called Prefectures) for a protest gathering.

If the government does not listen again, the pace will be picked up, and stronger actions will follow.

The protest points are:
  • No to the mandatory technical inspection of motorcycles
  • Yes to the reduced taxes on motorcycle safety equipment
  • Yes to the lane splitting
  • More investment for education, not repression

Motorcycles are not the problem, they are a solution!
