For a fifth consecutive year, the French motorcycles and scooters market shrunk, thanks to the economic crisis. People just don't have the money to buy a new motorcycle, and it shows. During 2012, only 158,106 new motorcycles and scooters were registered. At the turn of the millennium, sales were at a premium, with a constant growth every year. But that stopped in 2007, and since then we've seen a steady decline in sales, and 2013 doesn't look any better.
Here are some of the more salient results of 2012, models, manufacturers and categories.
MODELS
The top 10 motorcycles and scooters sales during 2012 in France were:
1. Yamaha 500 Tmax : 6,471
2. Yamaha 125 Xmax : 6,441
3. Honda PCX 125 : 4,096
4. Kawasaki ER-6 : 3,773
5. Kawasaki Z 750 : 3,755
6. Yamaha XJ 600 : 3,489
7. Honda CB 600 F : 3,405
8. Suzuki GSR 750 : 3,287
9. Yamaha FZ8 : 2,909
10. Piaggio Xevo 125 : 2,276
You can see from the top 10, that the first 3 top sales were scooters. The first Triumph is found in 13th place with the Street Triple (1,788 units), the first BMW is in 16th place with the R1200RT (1,700 units), KTM in 20th with the 125 Duke (1,447 units), Harley-Davidson in 27th place with the XLH 1200 X (1,119 units) and first Ducati can be found in 44th place with the Street Fighter selling 776 unit.
MANUFACTURERS
Looking at total per manufacturer, this is what the top 10 looks liken with the number of units, and in between brackets the market share:
1. Yamaha : 29,167 (18.45%)
2. Honda : 24,695 (15.62%)
3. Kawasaki : 12,817 (8.11%)
4. Suzuki : 12,163 (7.69%)
5. BMW : 11,043 (6.98%)
6. Piaggio : 9,567 (6.05%)
7. Harley : 8,066 ( 5.10%)
8. KTM : 6,647 (4.20%)
9. Peugeot : 5,745 (3.63%)
10. Triumph : 5,621 (3.56%)
Japanese motorcycles are still dominating the French market with 49.87% of the market.
