At any large motorcycle event in France, the government, aided by the local authorities and managed by the French Association of Angry Bikers (FFMC Open link in a new window) organize a rest place for motorcycle riders attending the event.

Strategically place alongside roads that will have a large number of bikers riding to the event, these Biker Rest Places, called Relais Calmos, are a meeting point for bikers, but also a great place to unwind from a long journey.

The Relais Calmos offer a variety of services, usually free. Depending on the size of the Relais, you can find anything from free drinks (hot & cold), food, snacks, visor cleaning, tire pressure pumps, message boards, fuel, mechanical intervention, and some even offer massages.

The Relais Calmos are paid for by the French government, and staffed by volunteers from the FFMC. Often, again depending on the Relais, the sites are manned 24 hours during an event.

The Relais Calmos is well sign posted along the roads, bringing you to the rest place.

For the 24 Hours of Le Mans motorcycle race, I went and visited a small Relais Calmos at Maison Brullée in Departement 27 (that's close to the city of Rouen, and in place for motorcycle riders coming from the North and Paris). The site was run by volunteers of FFMC 76 Open link in a new window.

They expected between 500 and 1,000 motorcycle per day, and they were only open on Saturday and Sunday.

The area is clearly marked and traffic cones have been placed to ensure that motorcycle don't crash into each other, and into passing cars.

Clearly marked FFMC volunteers manage the traffic, stopping cars when there's an exit, and welcoming bikers coming in.

On one side of the grounds was a truck belonging to a local motorcycle shop that had an air compressor used to inflate tires, and help in checking tires and small mechanical interventions (for free).

Inside specially erected tents, they served, free, hot drinks (coffee) and cakes.

The whole day, until even after the 24 hours race has started, bikes will keep coming in.

Two lanes had been setup, and clearly marked, for incoming and outgoing motorcycles.

The place was hopping with bikers, with a continuous stream of them coming and going. It's a great place to meet up, and to unwind before setting out again to the final destination.

Thank you FFMC for doing this, and thank you French government for helping out.
