The French government has published the traffic accidents and mortality statistics for 2006. Things are looking up! France used to be one of the worst in Europe with regards to deadly accidents. This is no longer the case.

In general, there were 11.5% less deadly accidents in 2006 over 2005. Specifically, pedestrian deaths went down 15.7%, cars down 14.3%, motorcycles down 12.7%, while bicycles went up 0.6%.

One of the biggest contributors to the decrease of deadly accidents was the average speed reduction throughout France. Part of the speed reductions can be attributed to the many automatic speed radars, but also the increase of gasoline prices forced the average French driver to reduce speed.

Alcohol is still one of the highest contributing factors for accidents, with 28.4% of all deadly accidents involving drinking & driving.

Driving License

In total, during 2006, 8 MILLION licence points were taken away, an increase of 7% over 2005. This represents a total of 68,866 driving licenses that were revoked, an increase of 27% over 2005. This has resulted in an increase of accidents by drivers without a valid driving license by 1.8%.

Speed

On average, 15% of all cars speed, 30% of motorcycles and 14% of trucks.

International

Looking at the deaths per million inhabitants during 2005, France had better results than Austria, Spain, Belgium and Italy, but worse than Germany and the UK.

>> For motorcycle deaths, France has 2.8 times more deaths than Germany, per kilometer!! <<
