France And Belgium Sign Bilateral Agreement For Traffic Fines

Speeding Sign
This is something we're going to see a lot of in the nearby future.

European governments are not only working at solving the economic crisis. Some parts of governments are looking at ways of increasing their revenue, and one way is the famous speeding ticket.

Normally, if you get caught speeding in another country, you could ignore the ticket, since the other country could not come and collect their dues, not would your home country go and collect the money for another country.

France, who in recent years have been ferocious about speeding fines know that some 30% of fines do not get paid, since they are perpetrated by foreign drivers. Therefore, France had already signed bilateral agreements with Germany, Luxembourg and Switzerland for this purpose.

Last Monday, they announced a 4th bilateral agreement, that of Belgium. If a Belgian motorcycle rider gets caught speeding in France, the Belgium government will collect the fine and send it to France. The other way equally applies, a French registered motorcycle, when caught speeding in Belgium, will have to pay the fine.

The really big explosion will come the day a bilateral agreement is signed between UK and France. Many motorcycles come to France to race on their fine roads with full impunity. Negotiations are underway, so that's not going to last very long.

It looks like shortly we'll all be riding nice and gentle on each other's roads. So now when I visit The Netherlands and cross through Belgium, I'll need to be very careful. Bummer...
