Like in the Orwell Nineteen Eighty-Four, Big Brother Open Big Brother link in a new window, in this case the police, sees everything. In France, the cops are testing out a new police car for a period of one year before putting a fleet of these in service.

The new all-seeing car has no less than 8 video cameras installed in the top siren & strobe light bar on the car, and the cameras are pointing everywhere. Every vehicle that the camera sees gets analyzed on the spot, and in microseconds will come back with any pertinent information about the vehicle (car, motorcycle, truck) and its driver. The cameras can even read a license plate at an angle.

The car is being tested out in the city of Every, and according to the local police, the car is not there to generate tickets, but for fighting crime. The car onboard computer will tell its occupants whether a vehicle has been stolen or whether the driver is being wanted for some crime or another. At least, that is the official 'excuse'.

<SARCASM ON>Of course they'll not generate tickets. Oh yeah, and the check/cheque is in the mail.<SARCASM OFF> What do they want us to believe. The equipment itself costs €30.000 and the cops aren't paying for it, since they will be sharing the revenue it generates with the manufacturer. So why is this a crime-fighting machine? Well, it's not ... it's a money making machine. It will even issue parking tickets if a car isn't parked straight.

What's even worse is that all the information will be stored and kept for two years; vehicle license plate, location, date & time.

They just need to drive through a street at a normal street, and the car issues one parking ticket after the other without even stopping. It's not like we're not paying any taxes is it?

Here is a (in French) video of the car in operation
