The French politicians and law makers are not sitting on the laurels now that road deaths have decreased over the years. I think they're aiming for 0% deaths...or at least die trying. - The French government has made it known, that the current 1858 automatic digital radars will be augmented by 500 new radars per year, lasting through 2012. In other words, after some quick math, some 2500 new radars will be added, giving us a total of some 4000 radars by the end of 2012 (still a lot less than the UK).
- Mandatory confiscation of any vehicle caught speeding 50 kph or DUIDriving Under Influence. Drinking and driving. for the 2nd time.
- In the case of you involuntary causing someone's death in an accident, your license is automatically withdrawn, even if it wasn't your fault.
- If you've been caught riding (driving) a vehicle while being drunk, a special anti-starter alcohol testing device will be installed in your car/bike. You will need to blow in the tube before being allowed to start.
- All booze sales at motorway roadside shops will be stopped.
- All vehicles will need to have a reflective vest onboard, to be used if your vehicle is broken down.
- Finally, there's been a traffic of license points, people selling their license points to people who need them {link}. If caught, you can be punished with 6 months prison and €15,000 fine.
Boy.. are things getting strict here; Might as well move to Switzerland...
