The French government is looking at following the example of Switzerland and the UK by placing fake radars alongside the roads. They will look like real radars, some of them might even flash, but for the rest there are no electronics inside. So no speeding ticket. These radars will be placed away from the 4200 speed radars in operation already.

IMHO, this is dangerous, especially if they have not been signaled / signposted. Cars are going to see them and hit the brakes, causing accidents. Even cars that are respecting the speed limits are going to hit their brakes.

The other type of radar they are looking into is one in operation in Belgium. It's a half-fixed speed radar, a radar that can be dismounted rapidly and moved to another location. This way they keep you unaware and guessing where the next radar is.

The car associations are very much against all these types of radars, and rightfully so. It has been proven time and time again that speed is a low factor in road deaths. There are so many areas that need to be improved to reduce road fatalities, but none of them bring in so much cash to the government. So they will continue "fighting" speed, and not do much about the real killers; DUI, sleeping-driving, bad roads, crash barriers that kill bikers, bad sign posts, expensive motorways, etc etc ... the list goes on.
