For the last 9 years, road deaths in France have been decreasing at a good pace. Using repressive methods, but also using a lot of communication and education, the program was started at the time by Nicolas Sarkozy, now President of France. The 2010 road mortality figures went for the first time under the magical number of 4,000 (3994 to be exact). A drop of 6.5% over 2009. Injured, but non-mortal accidents, also dropped significantly, down 13.1%. Motorcycles deaths also dropped, which is a good thing, since PTWPowered Two Wheel - motorcyles, scooters, mopeds are always the exception. An amazing drop of 20% for motorcycles, and 12% drop for mopeds. In 2009 there were 1144 deaths, in 2010 the figure dropped to 941. In the mean time, on one hand the French government is still increasing the number of radars, including the latest hi-tech generation of digital radars, but on the other hand, they are making it (a tiny bit) easier to recover your driving license in case you loose it for speeding.
