They finally decided and published the norms. The French government, despite a big push-back from the users are determined to find out who you are when you fly past a radar on your motorcycle or scooter. Until now, the license plates where, according to the authorities, too small to determine who you are, so they're changing it. Initially, they wanted to make the plates much bigger, but thanks to enormous protests organized by the French Association of Angry Bikers (FFMC ), they back down and decided for slightly bigger sizes. Currently the sizes allowed are 170 × 130 mm (6.6 x 5.11 inch), 210 (8.27 inch) × 130 mm, 170 × 140 mm (9.45 inch) , 210 × 140 mm , but starting July 2012, there will be one size; 180 x 200 mm (7 x 7.87 inch). They're not going to be much taller, but they will be a lot longer! The new size is not retroactive, in other words, we'll not have to change the plate until such time the motorcycle or scooter is re-registered. Failing to comply with the new size will result in a €135 fine.
