It's shortly presidential election time here in France, and the politicians just don't know what to do to attract press attention. This time it's the minister of ecology, Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet (who is as green as China is), who has come up with a master plan. She wants to forbid all motorcycles and scooters built before the 1st of July 2004 (a total of 1.6 million of them) from riding in specific areas in one of the 8 big cities, Paris included. Also concerned are cars built before 1997 (8 million), class 1 utility vehicles built before 1997 and class 2 built before 1998, and some 300,000 trucks built before 2001. In her "esteemed" opinion, this will reduce pollution in the big cities. There's no denying that it will reduce pollution. In that case why not just say no vehicles at all... that will stop pollution dead in its tracks... Getting caught with a polluting vehicle, God knows how they will know which ones were built when, will cost you a €68 fine. She also said that individual cities can do their own laws, so one may restrict more, or less, depending on their political means. In other words, a mess. A totally radical and not-practical move. Great for the sound-bites, but I don't think many people will believe in this. I hope.. The minister is talking about making this into a law next year. 2012? Oh yeah, that's when the presidential elections are... Scary people...
