France: Pair/Impair Circulation Starts Today - Including Motorcycles

As usual the French politicians are running behind the events, reacting instead of planning & preparing. And as usual, it looks like the country is run by a bunch of incompetent bureaucrats who have never worked in a real life situation. Let me explain:

Since early last week, France has been hit by a very bad pollution, of the Chinese Bejing kind. It has gotten very bad, and the health of many was starting to suffer. The European Union had already told France to do something about their pollution if not get fined millions of Euros, but instead over the last decade, the successive French governments have been promoting the use of diesel cars, claiming that they were the most friendly ecological solution for transportation. Anyone with half a brain knows that diesel pollutes, but that didn't stop the governments from giving nice tax credits to anyone buying a diesel car. So you guessed it, the country is full of diesel cars, and now it has come back to bite them in the rear portion of their bodies.

While the peak of the pollution was last week Thursday and Friday, and with air becoming less polluted over the weekend, and finally today, Monday, the air is close to its normal pollution level, the French government finally reacted and has imposed a pair/impair system. This means that any vehicle that drives into Paris today can only do so if their license plate has an impair (odd) number. Vehicles with a pair (even) number will have to wait until tomorrow to use it, the day the impair license plates will need to garage their vehicle. A great solution for those that really need to work and have been forced to live far outside the city. You can get fired for not showing up for work....

It has happened once before, many years ago (1997) but in those days, motorcycles were exempt. Unfortunately, this time motorcycles will need to follow the same rules, i.e., today only motorcycles with an impair license plate will be allowed to ride.

As far as I know, there are no diesel motorcycle riding around Paris, and motorcycles don't stay on the road as long as cars, so pollute far less. Where it takes a car 1 hour to get to work, it takes a motorcycle 20 minutes.  So when doing this late knee-jerk reaction, why include bikes????

The only motorcycles that are allowed to enter Paris with a pair license plate are electric motorcycles (and electric cars). Obviously politician's cars are exempt.

So we have here another example how stupid and lazy politicians are. Almost after the "crisis" do they do something about it, and they do it very badly without any thought process. Other countries have a similar system, working more or less, but bikes are usually exempt, and the system is more for regulating intense traffic.
