The election for the Mayor of Paris, held in a few months, is heating up. On one side we have a socialist candidate (and current #2 of Paris) Anne HidalgoAnne Hidalgo and on the other hand another female candidate from the conservative (UMP) party, Nathalie Kosciusko MorizetNathalie Kosciusko Morizet better known as NKM.

The current Mayor, also a socialist, has been cutting back roads and parking spaces for cars and motorcycles, telling the world that they will be better off using public transport or renting one of his city's bicycles. He has put in place an electric car sharing program, which seems to work reasonably well. But the number of parking spots have diminished as fast as a French baker can put out warm croissants.

This means of course that the number of motorcycles and scooters has increased. People need to get to work and the public transportation network is quite extensive but totally inadequate and is often on strike. So people buy 125cc scooters and motorcycles and use that to go to work.

Scooter Parking Paris

But now the socialist candidate wants to make PTWPowered Two Wheel - motorcyles, scooters, mopeds pay for their parking; a parking infrastructure that is almost non-existent in Paris. There are way too few official parking slots, and now they want to make us pay for the few there are.

I'm afraid that nowadays politicians are more blinded by reality than in the old days. There seems to be no "cause & effect" analysis, nor any real future projections - just short knee-jerk reactions and political posturing. No what-is-good-for-the-country but more what-is-good-for-me.

In the mean time, under pressure by the motorcycle lobby groups, she has changed her tune to "pay only for underground parking".

Having the socialists win the elections in Paris can not be a good thing, but so far the conservatives haven't been a shining light either, just a series of fumbles and bad sound bites.
