The elections for next year's Mayor of Paris is heating up, and both side, left and right of the political spectrum, are having their sound bites , saying stuff that will hopefully catch some moments of PR glory.
The main candidate of the Socialist party (the current party for both Paris and the country), Anne Hidalgo (link ), has already expressed her dislike of motorized vehicles, especially motorcycles, and she has been campaigning to reduce lanes and reduce speeds in the country's capital.
But now she wants to go further. On the Paris ring road, known as the Peripherique, the speed limit is 80 kph. The ring road is used by millions to go to work and back, allowing them to circumnavigate the city. The ring road in some places if enormously wide, 6 lanes deep, and so when it is not rush hour, you can save time by using the "Perif".
Hidalgo has already been campaigning to reduce speeds to 70 kph, and now she is going even further; she wants to ring road to be reduced to 50 kph, ie, crawl speed. During rush hour, it makes no difference since the ring road is jammed packed with vehicles and the average speed will be around 10 kph. But outside these hours, the whole idea is to be able to quickly bypass Paris. Even if you are not going into Paris, as many drivers do, Paris is in the main North-South motorway, so many cars, trucks and motorcycles need to pass through that road to go North or South. Reducing the speed to 50 kph will severely limit their options.
Possibly more people will actually drive through Paris, hoping the escape the lunacy of the ring road. And since there are going to be less and less lanes available to vehicles, it is going to become a mad house. That is .... if the socialists win. But the way they have been running the city into the ground, that chance is getting dimmer by the day, and that is a good thing at this moment.
