It's an election month for the French towns and cities, and the biggest city, Paris, is heating up. Between the main contenders there is a flurry of promises. And as we know, campaign promises are in the same category as "the check is in the mail" ....

However, the recent promises of the Socialist candidate, Anne HidalgoAnne Hidalgo, could be true. Based on her predecessor's track record of having a successful bicycle and electric car sharing program, the female candidate to the Mayor of Paris has promised an electric scooter sharing program.

The program will be called Scootlib' (like the bicycle program is called Velolib', the car program is called Autolib') and should see between 3000 and 5000 electric scooters using 700 charging stations (many to be solar based) to be placed around the city (which would probably mean you will be allowed to use them to charge your motorcycle, as is the case today with the electric cars - link Open link in a new window).

The Mayor-candidate foresees a rental fee of €3 to €10 per hour, and a range of 40 to 90 kilometers. The scooters will have a GPS that will allow you to geolocalize the scooter, and renting them will be done via your smartphone or via the web.

It's not a first, since Barcelona already has a similar service in place (link Open link in a new window), but for sure, this is an interesting program that just could reduce the pollution in the city, and make people more aware of motorcycles.

Finally a sensible program, but I guess they'll need to hammer out a few points, like where does the helmet come from.
