It's a very little known fact here in France, but professional motorcycle riders, such as motorcycle taxis, delivery services (couriers), medical and vehicle assistance riders are allowed to wear only approved protective clothing.

As you probably know, in France (like the rest of Europe), some protective items are mandatory, like helmets and gloves. But professional riders need to at all times wear not only protective clothing such as helmets, gloves, jackets, trousers and boots, but these items need to be approved.

During summer, the Gendarmes don't wear protective jackets, and just ride in short sleeves (because of internal rules).

Does that mean that these motorcycle riding cops aren't considered professional, or that the rules just don't apply to them?

It does mean that for example motorcycle taxis must ride the hot Parisian streets in full gear.....
