The French government has used the recent road mortality figures, specially by motorcycle riders, as a great excuse to come down even harder on our pockets. More restrictive measures call for more revenue for a cash strapped, and very unpopular, government.
According to the Minister of Interior the death rate on the excellent French roads increased dramatically, and now wants to catch as many bikers as he can. Preferably all of them.
But the ever vigilant French Association of Angry Bikers (FFMC ) call B.S.. Recently published statistics by one of the government's own agencies (ONISR) has shown that in fact there was no increase in motorcycle-related deaths, but a decrease of 20.7%!
According to the FFMC, the French government used initial statistics from the beginning of the year, and correlated those to the rest of the year. If you remember, the first part of the year had one of the strongest winters recorded in recent years, which resulted in many accidents, mostly due to ice. Taking those figures and projecting them over the year, to me, amounts to a criminal action.
In real terms, over the last ten years, the number of motorcycles and scooters in use has almost doubled, but the number of deadly accidents have not.
It's time that the current government, if they want to be reelected, start using their brains in a positive manner, not in knee-jerk reactions trying to milk their voters dry. If you want more money, got for the super wealthy ... the ones that don't pay any taxes.
