Starting next week, on the 3rd of August, France will see new radar warning signs appear on the roads. Until now, the signs (see left photo) warned you of a radar up ahead, usually within 1/2 kilometer. The sign was followed by the speed limit, so you could slow down and ride your motorcycle through the speed radar at the authorized speed. But starting next week, that's changing. A new sign (see the right photo) will tell you that you are in a zone that contains a speed radar, but the zone itself could be 2 kilometers long, meaning you'll need to slow down for two kilometers. On its own, you can argue that people should be riding at the authorized speed limits, but from experience, and from statistics, people slow down way below the speed limit out of fear that their speedometer is not correct and since they'll fine your for being a few kilometers over the limit. I've seen cars dropping their speeds in a 130 kph zone, from 140 to 90. So you can guess the accidents that follow.... The first three signs will be on the RD 936 at Lamonzie-Saint-Martin, the A36 at Sausheim and on the RD 83 at Rouffach. More zones will follow late this year, until they have covered all of France.
