The socialist and very unpopular French government have been making a lot of noise recently that they want to reduce the speed limit on the French secondary roads, from 90 kph to 80 kph. Already it has been met with some massive protests (link Open link in a new window), lead by the motorcycle lobby groups.

Officially, according to the unpopular government, it is to reduce road fatalities and to fight pollution. At least, that is the official story. Now let's look at a recent speed reduction implemented in France.

January 2014 saw the speed limits reduced from 80 kph to 70 kph (link Open link in a new window) on the Parisian ringroad (the famous Boulevard Peripherique). Again, the official reason was to fight accidents, pollution and noise levels.

During the time that the speed reduction has been in place until now, Paris has never seen that many heavily polluted days, so much so that they had to start an even/uneven license plate day to reduce the number of cars in the capital (link Open link in a new window). Noise levels remain the same, and accidents have not diminished either.

But one thing has increased: - the number of speeding fines. A dramatic increase in the number of fines has been filed, 20% more than previous months.  They also announced that the number of speeding ticket issued on the Parisian ring road had been reducing last year. So put two and tow together, and what do you get?

And now we see why the government want to implement speed reductions. Not for accidents, not for pollution - but for money!
