It would seem that the French are courteous on the road only once a year; - the 24th of March is "Courteous on the Road" day in France. It is known that the French driver can be "a bit" over-anxious when driving a car in heavy traffic, specially in Paris. This often results in verbal (and an occasional physical) abuse, horn symphonies and dangerous driving (rapid lane changing, etc). To fight this increasing phenomena, the French authorities have called for a day that all drivers should behave civil to each other. And on that day, the general public is "schooled" about behavior changes through leaflets and TV programs. This is the 6th year the special day is held. One interesting point they make is the "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" attitude. Everyone is a pedestrian AND a driver. But often drivers will not obey the rules & regulations regarding pedestrians, BUT when the driver becomes a pedestrian, THEY INSIST on those same rules be respected ! Anyway, it's interesting to see that we need to single out a day to be courteous and civil to each other. As a motorcyclist, I have very little problem with the French car driver. In fact, in most cases the French drivers respect the motorcycle and go out of their way to make our lives easier (see my article on riding in France - {link}).
