monjournaldebord.midiblogs.com | It used to be a real paradox in France. The French motorcycle Gendarme (Police) had to make sure everyone respected the law, and had to set the example for other motorcycle riders. Their training is second to none {link}, their riding skills equal any motorcycle sports racer, and often their disposition towards us mere mortals is always nice and cool. But in one aspect they do not set the standards:- the ATGATTAll The Gear, All The Time - meaning you always wear all your safety gear. rules. The French motorcycle Gendarme is governed by the Military Horse Unit (Gendarmes are Military), and therefore their clothing is dictated by the Horse Unit Uniform of the Day; and that is in the summer, short sleeves and no jacket. So all summer long, you see motorcycle cops riding with very red arms from sun and wind burn. But all that will change for 2009, the French cops are going the opposite way, the latest technology will be made available. The French Department of Defense ("Ministere de Defense") have put out a request For Proposal to equip 5,000 motorcycle cops with not only real summer (and winter) jackets and trousers, but ones that incorporate an airbag. The first test will be accomplished during spring 2009, and the cops will be fully equipped before the summer season. From one extreme to another.... Good for them, I always felt sorry for them in the summer. No protection....
