Modular (flip-up) helmets are quite popular with motorcycle riders the world over. They offer a relative good safety (better than an open face helmet, but less than an integral one), and the comfort of opening the front, exposing your chin while riding at low speeds or in the city is a treat. But many modular helmets are expensive since they have moving parts.

Italian accessory maker Givi Open link in a new window have released a low cost modular helmet called the X.14 Shift Open X.14 Shift link in a new window. The big difference with their other modular helmets (X.09 and X.08) is that the X.14 has only received certification for use as integral helmet, meaning it is officially only allowed to be used with the front down. This doesn't mean that the front will not flip-up, it just means that officially you are not allowed to ride with the front up. It also means that if you crash with the front up, your protection is almost non-existing.

For the rest, it remains a nifty, but low cost, flip-up helmet. It weighs 1690 grams, has removable interior lining and cheek pads and is made out of anallergic materials.

The anti-scratch visor can be quickly released and it even has a built-in sun visor. There are a few Givi options available like anti-fog inserts, different visors and wind protectors, but those cost extra.

Three colors are available: black, white and yellow.

Cost: around €137-€149  (I've even seen it on Greek sites going for €116).
