People with a disability want to ride a motorcycle as much as those that don't have a disability! If you lose the use of your legs, it doesn't mean that your life comes to an end. We've shown a home made solution {link}, but here's a series produced motorcycle equipped to handle wheelchairs. The manufacturer is Martin Conquest , and they are based in the UK. They've taken a BMW R1150R and turned it into a special trike adapted to wheelchairs, called "The Conquest". It's an incredible feat of engineering. In the middle of the motorcycle is an automated ramp, on which the wheelchair is pulled. Using a push-button key, the ramp is remotely controlled, lowering and rising the ramp. The 6 gears are changed by a thumb-operated Klicktronic, and the gear includes 1 reverse gear. The handbrake is electronically operated. The wheelchair is locked into place by Ez-Lock, with a push-button release mechanism. The motorcycle even has a VDO Dayton single CD tuner with 140 watts maximum output, 30 radio presets and 2 waterproof speakers. There's even a lot of accessories you can purchase, like GPS, MP3, special seats for passengers, etc. The technology doesn't come cheap, but what is the price for pleasure? Expect UK£ 21,495. In September 2006 Martin Conquest received confirmation that The Conquest has secured approval from Motability for inclusion in its Hire Purchase Scheme. Under this arrangement UK disabled drivers can convert their disability allowance into a hire purchase financing scheme that can be used as part payment for The Conquest. Martin Conquest can also arrange further finance if this is necessary. For more information click here
