Airbag jackets for motorcycles are making enormous leaps forward. No longer are they just an airbag but often offer fully functional and nicely designed jackets. I think the racing programs for professionals racers like those in the MotoGP world are one of the reasons there is an accrued interest in airbag jackets.

Many of the high-tech airbag jackets use onboard electronics to deploy the airbag. This means that you need to have the counterpart of the electronics built-in to your motorcycle. It makes the airbag a lot safer, but it raises expenses, since you need to have the electronics fitted to you bike(s).

The other way is simpler: you attach a ripcord to your motorcycles, the other end is attached to the air-release mechanism of the jacket. If you can thrown of your motorcycles, the cord pulls the release mechanism and the jacket gets inflated. Simple. You don't need to worry that you will inflate the jacket by accident when you forget to detach yourself when leaving your motorcycle; you need quite some force to do that.

Japanese Hit-Air Open Hit-Air in a new window was one of the first manufacturers to make independent airbag jackets, using the ripcord system. They have recently released their latest airbag jacket, the EU5 Open EU5 link in a new window.

The EU5 is a full fledged motorcycle jacket that even without the airbag portion would be interesting. The jacket is rainproof and very much adjustable (arms, cuffs, waist) and has a liner for the cold weather and an additional optional B-Liner 5 for the extreme cold weather.

Like any good and self-respecting motorcycle jacket they even now have rear zippers to open (or close) two air vents in the back. Don't look for vents in the front since that is where the airbag portion is, so you'll not be able to vent from there. The jacket itself is made out of high quality nylon and polyester, the kind found on premium touring jackets.

Of the three outside pockets, only one is totally rainproof, the others have got a rubber protection flap.  Standard are shoulder and elbow padding and a soft padding for the back. Optional are reinforced (Level 2) back and chest protectors.

The whole thing has a 24 liter airbag system incorporated with a 60cc CO2 gas cartridge. The whole thing "blows-up" within 200 milliseconds. The jacket itself weighs 2.9 kilos.

The price is hefty but for the money you not only get a 4 season, grey or black, motorcycle jacket, but the added safety of an airbag. price: around €599.
