For a while Honda was the only manufacturer to offer an airbag option on their motorcycles, and in fact, it was only on their flag ship tourer, the Gold Wing . And for a while, a lot of manufacturers, and journalists, deemed Honda crazy to even think about an airbag. But slowly it has become more accepted, and now Honda has applied for a general patent for a motorcycle airbag. The airbag would sit in between the handlebar housing and the windscreen, and deploy upwards in case of an accident. The patent is quite extensive, with a lot of drawings. The airbag, according to Honda should deploy in an type of collision between the motorcycle and an object, and at not matter what angle. The objective of the airbag is to avoid the biker from being thrown over the motorcycle onto the object or road. Instead, they should crash their face into the airbag....okay, maybe a bit sarcastic, but there are so many ways for leaving your motorcycle unwillingly, this would maybe prevent one exit; frontal collision. I don't know about you, but I am a bit cynical about this. Do you think it will save lives? Should this be implemented on all motorcycles? Or is an airbag equipped jacket a better idea? Click here to read the Honda airbag patent (with a lot of legalese).
