Although this lock has been designed for bicycles, as the saying goes, "what's good for the goose is good for the gander". This should work well for motorcycles, so here it goes.

Motorcycle (and bicycle) locks are getting smarter and high-tech. It used to be a dumb lock that you placed on your motorcycle, and if you forgot the key, you needed a saw. The lock was just that ... a lock. Nothing else. Of course they were cheaper than what I am about to show you, but now you get so much more than just a lock.

SkyLock

SkyLock Open SkyLock link in a new window is a super lock that is waiting for initial funding to go into production. SkyLock is foremost a lock, something to ensure that you bike does not walk away without you (ie does not get stolen). The design is military standard, so a bit more difficult to steal than your average lock.

SkyLock

Keyless Locking

So far for the lock. Now for the extra bits. The SkyLock opens and closes using your smartphone (if your battery on the smartphone runs out, you can use touch buttons on the lock to key in a combination). Once you are in touch with your lock, press a button on your phone, and the lock opens or closes. Don't want to bother taking your phone out of your jacket or backpack? You can set the lock to automatically lock or unlock. All you need to do is be close to unlock. If you place the lock and walk away, the lock automatically activates. Laziness at its best - I love it.

The smartphone app also shows you how much charge there is left in your lock's battery.

Memorizing Location

Since your smartphone is activating the lock, it also means it will register the exact location of the lock; This way, if you parked your motorcycle in a busy parking (like Sturgis or at a motorcycle race), your smartphone will show you where you left your motorcycle (or at least where your lock is).

SkyLock

Solar Charging

The lock can be charged using an USB port, but you don't need to. The SkyLock has a solar panel, allowing you to charge your lock using sunlight. According to the manufacturer, one hour of sunlight is enough charge for one week of locking operation.

Anti-Theft

It also has a "disturb" feature, but I am less inclined to see the use. What it means is that the SkyLock has an accelerometer that can be used to warn you if your bike is being moved (or stolen). However to warn you, it only works via Bluetooth or Wifi. That's limited, since you're not going to care for the Bluetooth range since you'll be seeing it since you'll need to be that close, and to get a Wifi signal, you'll be pretty close as well.

SkyLock

Crash Detection/Safety Check

But the accelerometer serves another useful purpose. If you crash, the lock will sense it and immediately ask you if you are okay via the smartphone app. If you don't answer within the specified delay, it will warn people you have put in a warning list, or even notify the authorities. Not a bad extra feature.

SkyLock needs funding to reach US$50,000 to go into production. They are selling the SkyLock in a limited sales for US$159. Once it goes into production, it'll cost US$249.

Below is a video explaining and showing the SkyLock in use (with a bicycle but you can see the use on a motorcycle).
