Regular readers of this site will know that I was born with two left hands. I am incapable of doing anything mechanical on my motorcycle, and that involves changing tires. For example when the winter arrives, I would love to continue riding, but that would mean putting on studded tires, and that means travelling 200 kms to the closest dealer, something I will not do either.
Ideally I would have a James Bond style tire; push a button and out comes the studs. Why not? Well, that what Finnish tire maker Nokian thought as well.
They have developed a tire that by the press of a button deploys the tire's studs. What's more, since it's activated electronically, you can place some intelligence behind it. Like having a smartphone monitor the weather and road conditions, and if it starts freezing, automatically deploy the studs.
So far, it's a concept, a study. But hopefully we'll see this technology reach our motorcycle shortly. You can click here to read more about the automatic studded tires from Nokian.
