Most cities in India are very crowded and polluted, with masses of vehicles, mostly 2 or 3 wheelers packing the streets, bellowing smoke. It's maybe not as bad as China, but it's close.

India Polluted Traffic Jams

An incentive plan to get people to ride electric motorcycles and scooters ended in march 2012, and sales dropped from 100,000 vehicles to 21,000 last year. Of the 65 manufacturers that made cheap electric scooters (using mostly cheap Chinese lead-based batteries), only 10 remain. But with the likes of Hero Electric Open link in a new window and Mahindra Open link in a new window, and new battery technology, things are looking up.

The Indian government is pouring $2.3 billion dollars into this fledging industry until the year 2020, looking for 6 to 7 million electric PTWPowered Two Wheel - motorcyles, scooters, mopeds. With a massive influx of electric scooters and motorcycles, there will be less CO2 (and noise) pollution, and these electric vehicles will become cheaper and cheaper.

The Indian National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 (NEMMP 2020) will influence not only India, but also Europe and North America. 4 to 5 million vehicles can make technologies adapt faster and cheaper to make these types of EVs accepted by a great number worldwide.

Their plan also calls for a national charging station network to be in place throughout the country.

Now, wouldn't it be nice if Europe would sponsor electric motorcycles and scooters?
