India has something to be proud of, they have overtaken China as the country with the most road deaths. According to the WHO Open link in a new window organization, some 1.3 MILLION people die yearly on India's road.

And it's the roads that are one of the main reasons so many people in India are dead. Poor infrastructure, and dangerous driving habits contributed to the Number 2 country in road mortality to surpass the former Number 1, China. That's right, India is now bigger than China, at least in road deaths.

The bad driving habits consist of speeding, DUIDriving Under Influence. Drinking and driving., not wearing proper motorcycle helmets, not using car seats, etc., the usual suspects It's the growing middle class that is the reason the statistics jumped. The ever growing middle class are being bombarded with TV ads, inciting them to buy the latest car or motorcycle, and the younger ones in that class, aged between 15 and 29 years, pay the price.

The safest way of getting a motorcycle around in India

Though 13% of the victims are pedestrians, 15% are car drivers and 27% are PTWPowered Two Wheel - motorcyles, scooters, mopeds. India has put in place a stringent set of rules and laws, but so far, they have not made an impact.

Maybe we could export President Sarkozy to India for a change? He'll fix that problem.
