It's not all doom & gloom in the motorcycle industry. Yes, a few motorcycle manufacturers closed their doors, or are in financial difficulties, and some countries report bad sales. But India escapes all the negative stuff, and even goes the other way; positive. Our favorite Indian motorcycle company (favorite because of their great TV ads), Bajaj , reported an increase of 51% (just read that number;... 51%) of motorcycle sales over the same month last year. They sold 249,974 motorcycles, compared to last year's October 165,477 unit. Hero Honda didn't do that well, selling "only" 354,156 motorcycles last month, compared to 352,499 last year. TVS Motor increased the motorcycle sales by 12% from 117,101 last year October, to 131,029 this October. So, all-in-all, not bad, if not excellent sales figures. If you then look at the big motorcycle manufacturers all coming to India, you now know why. Suzuki announced to be selling their Hayabusa, Harley-Davidson and Ducati have entered the market. But locally produced motorcycles are a lot cheaper than imported ones. If you look at the Ducati prices in India, you'd be shocked. A Ducati Monster 1100 will sell of INR 13,58,379 (US$29,000 or €19,600). A Streetfighter is proposed at INR 18,07,185 (US$38,500 or €26,1000). (Source: Car Trade India ). So how will they do against a cheaper competition. Granted, the local competition does not have high powered bikes, but at these prices only the very rich can afford them. I guess time will tell.
