Not all countries are doom and gloom for the motorcycle industry. In India sales of scooters, and to a lesser degree motorcycles, are exploding. Between November 2010 and November 2011, scooter sales grew 39%! Motorcycle sales grew less, "only" by 23%. The biggest problem for the big four in India, Honda, Suzuki, Mahindra and TVS is to try to cope with the incredible high demand. Suzuki has a backlog of 30,000 scooters, and even after expanding their factory by 30%, they'll still be short. “Scooters still remain an untapped market in India. We expected the scooter segment to grow to 35% by 2016, when the Indian two – wheeler market is expected to double to 20 million units,” said India Yamaha Motor CEO & MD Hiroyuki Suzuki. According to the Economic Times of India, it's woman in Tier II cities that drive up the demand. Road infrastructure has improved over the last few years, generating a big sales to women who work. “The growth in the scooter segment is being fuelled by socioeconomic factors including the rise in the number of working women, spread of smaller and satellite towns, and the overall economic growth in the country that is expected to sustain for the next few years,” said Anil Dua, Hero MotoCorp senior VP, Marketing & Sales. So maybe India could outsource the production to factories in Europe and North America.... that should balance the trade a bit...
