At least in Ireland they aren't stuck on repression for speeding, like they are here in France. In France it's all about catching speeders, be it in a car or on a motorcycle. Thousands of radars have been deployed, and more are on the way.
But in Ireland they are now attacking one of the mortal dangers of a biker; texting while driving. Car drivers who text while driving are lethal for motorcycles (and obviously for other road users). 1 out of 5 accidents are caused because the driver was distracted, usually because of SMS messages. And the new technology has not made things safer, with the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Google+. To battle this "evil", starting next month anyone caught texting while behind the wheel will be fined €1000.
If the person gets caught a second time texting, the fine doubles - €2000. If in a one year period the person is caught a third time, they can spend up to 3 months in jail.
Now that is being tough on texting & driving.
