As we all know by now, car drivers that text while driving are mostly a danger to motorcycle riders. With the little attention span they already had, minus the 99% attention they are now giving to their smartphone to read and reply to the latest sextext from the BFF (or congressman or governor), they will never notice a motorcycle riding ahead of them. So texting & driving is very dangerous to us bikers. Governments around the world are trying to do something about it, but with very little result. But maybe Apple Open link in a new window can help (since they kind of created the problem anyway).

Apple have recently filed a patent (link Open link link in a new window) that will disable certain features of their phones when the iPhone is in motion. In other words, using a combo of GPS, motion detectors and even the cameras, the iPhone will ascertain that phone is in movement and if it is, disable functions like texting and emails.

Here is what the patent abstract says;

Left Quote
Lock-out mechanisms for driver handheld computing devices. The lock-out mechanisms disable the ability of a handheld computing device to perform certain functions, such as texting, while one is driving. In one embodiment, a handheld computing device can provide a lock-out mechanism without requiring any modifications or additions to a vehicle by using a motion analyzer, a scenery analyzer and a lock-out mechanism. In other embodiments, the handheld computing device can provide a lock-out

mechanism with modifications or additions to the vehicle, including the use of signals transmitted by the vehicle or by the vehicle key when engaged with the vehicle.

So, this is quite a good move, since the intelligence inside the smartphone will be able to distinguish whether you are in a car or just walking (although I think it should also be disabled when walking, but that is just my lonely old opinion).

There is only one disadvantage that I can see ..... what happens to the passengers inside the car? Are their texting and email functions also disabled, since how can the phone determine who is driving and who is a passenger. I couldn't see how they will handle it in their patent. Their including illustration does show that they will determine if the phone is in the hands of the driver or not...

Anyway, thank you Apple for thinking about road safety, and hopefully sparing the lives of a few of our sisters and brothers.
