Last October the 12th, Italy outlawed the use of beanie helmets. Tolerated for mopeds (and Harley motorcycle riders) until now, this has changed. The popular North American helmet is deemed not safe, and is therefore forbidden. Only motorcycle helmets approved by the ECE/ONU22 homologation certificate are allowed. If you get caught riding with a beanie helmet, even as a foreign visitor, you'll stand the chance of getting fined between €79 and €299, and they can impound your motorcycle. So if you're going to ride in Italy, beware! Click here to read more about the ECE 22 Safety standard for motorcycle helmets (Adobe Acrobat document).
