According to the Italian newspaper, La Repubblica  , local government officials and Police have manipulated red stop lights in several Italian cities to jump to red real quickly.
By passing through the orange phase in a heartbeat (3 seconds instead of 6), and then red, the motorcycle and car drivers could not react quickly enough, and therefore drove through the red light. And of course there would be a copper or a red light camera waiting for this to happen, and bammmm.... you've got a ticket.
Some 100,000 people were falsely ticketed using this method, generating €130 million. In some cities using this "method" the increase in tickets jumped 300%.
The courts are now looking into this practice.
Isn't Mafia an Italian word?? It does spring to mind...
