It's no fun being at a party or dinner, drinking some wine of beer, and then getting stopped and fined for DUIDriving Under Influence. Drinking and driving.. Though in France, alcohol breathalyzers are going to be mandatory for all cars (the proposed law will be that the unit must be in the car, not that you need to use it), not all people have one, And on a motorcycle it's even more difficult to have it on you. French insurance company MAAF , have developed an application for most smartphones and the iPad that tells you if you are legally capable of riding your motorcycle. No, you'll not be blowing into the smartphone. You'll be telling the app what you've been drinking and eating, plus a few details about yourself. (click on the screen captures for a bigger version). Once you've loaded the free Alcootel app on to your phone, you tell it your gender, age, height and weight. Don't worry, the data stays in the phone, so no one will know your real age and how much you weigh. Once you've done that, you're ready to find out if you are legally allowed to ride. Enter what you've been drinking, at what time of the day (beer, wines, sprites, etc). You can also say what you've been eating. It's very easy to use: select an approximate time frame, and with your finger, slide the icon into that time zone, drag & drop. Like if you had a beer and a sandwich at 1 PM, slide the beer icon and the sandwich to 13:00. Once you're done, the app will show you your legal alcohol level, plus an indicator how much more you are at risk of having an accident. If you are at the limit, sliding the alcohol time line, you can see when it should be okay to ride again. Of course, if you're not able to do any of the above, you probably are really, really, drunk. Below is a short video showing you the app. The apps and website are in French and in English. If you don't want to use a smartphone, you can use their web site.
