It seems to be more in fashion nowadays, resurrecting old and defunct motorcycle brands. Some are successful, and some are not (see related articles below). The latest manufacturer to be reborn is the Hungarian Pannonia. Manufactured between 1954 and 195 by the Czepel Motorcycle Plant, the yet-to-be-introduced model is called the Pannonia Bol d'Or, in honor of the French Bol d'Or race the "old" brand won back in 1956. The new company has been in a planning and design phase since 2007. Four years later, this is their first motorcycle:
2010 Pannonia Bol d'Or | The prototype is ready, and is under approval process by the Hungarian government. Once the permits are granted, a limited series of 55 motorcycle will be produced, hopefully by next year. The new company plans to introduce six to eight new models, but they'll need to get the first one right, if not they'll loose the market confidence even before they've started expanding.
Original Pannonia Bol d'Or | The Hungarian motorcycle website Totalbike.hu had a go at the new motorcycle, and came back a bit disappointed. According to them, the bike has a few design issues, like the license plate holder cuts into the rear tire when the springs compress. Despite local investments, the town where the motorcycle will be manufacturer took a 10% stake in the company, the company is looking at banks for investment. As we've seen in recent months, banks are afraid to dish out money, since there will be less left over for their bonuses. I have to say, for its looks, the new motorcycle looks promising.
