| Bikers ride during the "Enduropale", known as the "Enduro du Touquet" motorcycle endurance race, on the beach of Le Touquet, northern France, February 3, 2008. Some 1000 motorbikes and 350 quad bike riders descend on Le Touquet every year for the event. REUTERS/Jean-Pierre Rafto (FRANCE) | February 3rd was a sunny but very cold day at Le Touquet , which hosted the annual motorcycle beach race. 1,000 motorcycles started on Sunday for their 3 hours long race, through a 15 kilometer long circuit on the deep sand of Le Touquet beach. | French biker Arnaud Demeester rides on his way to win the second "Enduropale", known as the "Enduro du Touquet" motorcycle endurance race, on the beach of Le Touquet, northern France, February 3, 2008. REUTERS/Jean-Pierre Rafto (FRANCE) | The overall winner was, yet again, Arnaud Demeester, who won for the 7th time. He managed to win in the last lap, in the last curve, literally in the last few seconds of the race by beating Timotei Potisek. Third was Pierrick Paget. For the first time in it's history, the Le Touquet beach race suffered a heavy casualty, which is very surprising, since in the 1,000 contestants, only about 20 are professionals or semi-pro. 20 year old Benjamin Schots is in a coma after crashing into a sand dune and flying through the air for some 50 meters. 109 foreigners took part in the world's biggest beach race (51 finished), and some 250,000 spectators. The winner of the foreigner prize was Dutchman Cornelis Rosendaal. This year, the Enduropale also had a special prize for the disappointed Dakar racers, in other words, for those that were supposed to be riding in the Dakar rally, but had no where to go. Winner of that prize was Olivier Pain. Click here fo rmore information
