This weekend will see the start of the famous motorcycle beach race, the Le Touquet Enduropale Open link in a new window. This crazy motorcycle race is held on a 7 kilometer long beach, and 1100 motorcycles will race there for 3 hours. The actual race is on Sunday, but on Saturday there are Quad and junior races.

As usual, 100,000's of spectators are expected since it's free, and as usual, the A16 motorway (Autoroute) is free for motorcycles during the weekend.

On Saturday, starting at 09:00 in the morning, when you ride the A16, take the toll ticket when you enter the motorway. At exits #25, #26 or #27 you will be allowed to pass through without paying. There should be a special toll gate for motorcycles. Use that, and you can tear up your toll ticket.

Until Sunday 23:00 in the evening, when you ride onto the A16 from Le Touquet, do take the toll ticket. When you leave the A16, go via a manned toll booth. They will let you exit without paying. For those toll plazas that have no manned stations, the computer should see that you are a motorcycle, and when you feed your toll ticket into the booth, you should see a €0 charge. If not, press the interphone.

Do remember that there are going to be 10,000's of motorcycles going there, so expect enormous traffic jams, especially after the event. Also remember that the police will be out in force to catch you speeding, and not only on the motorway but also secondary roads.

Since it's winter here, and several of you will not bother going on your bike, the SNCF trains have special deals, so check with your local train station.

So if you are going, enjoy the spectacle. If you are not, and do not live in France (it is televised live on TV in France) there are a few web sites that will show you the race "live". I can not say however, if they filter geographically, so if you live abroad some may not work. Most live streaming will start around 12:00 and 12:15 CET. The race itself should start at 12:30 CET, but will depend on the tide.
